HSG Tube Test

Image

The HSG (Hysterosalpingography) tube test is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the condition of the fallopian tubes and uterus in women, often as part of fertility assessments. This test helps identify any blockages or abnormalities in the fallopian tubes that may be affecting a woman's ability to conceive.

How the HSG Test is Performed:

Preparation: The test is usually scheduled after a woman's period and before ovulation to avoid any interference with a potential pregnancy. An antibiotic may be prescribed to prevent infection.

Procedure:

  • The patient lies on an exam table, and a speculum is inserted into the vagina, similar to a Pap smear.
  • A contrast dye is injected through a thin tube into the uterus.
  • X-ray images (fluoroscopy) are taken as the dye flows through the uterus and into the fallopian tubes.

Assessment: The X-ray images show whether the fallopian tubes are open or blocked and provide a picture of the uterine cavity, helping to identify any abnormalities such as fibroids or polyps.
